Jehovah Tsuri {Names of God: Week 9}

0

While vacationing in Virginia a few years ago, we decided to hike a trail in the mountains.  The path appeared effortless.  The solid ground, crisp air, and babbling streams added to our conversation, and before long, we found ourselves at the end of the path.  The view was spectacular, so we sat awhile to enjoy the quiet.  We were not out of breath.  We were not tired.  We honestly didn’t even realize how far down the trail had taken us.  As we were getting ready to leave, an elderly gentleman carrying a walking stick paused to greet us.  We engaged in the usual banter – nice day, beautiful scenery, easy walk.  At the easy walk comment, his smile widened, and he began to laugh.  Reminding us we were at the bottom of this massive rock, we realized we now had to hike back to the top.  Having hiked this trail before, our new friend shared how difficult this was going to be.  I’m not a hiker.  I didn’t even have on hiking shoes!!  For the next two hours, we baby stepped our way to the entrance of the trail. The trail on this side was steep, rocky, and muddy.   For two hours I cried.  I complained.  I sat.  I knew I was never going to make it.  But my husband encouraged me, holding my hand to pull me, and at times pushing me from behind.  Had I known the difficulty of the return journey, I probably would not have started on that trail.  But I’m so glad I did.  What I received in the end far outweighed the difficult climb.

Isn’t it that way in our walk with the Lord?  When the trail is easy we simply enjoy the scenery and engage in good conversations.  Yet when the road is rocky and steep, we need the hand of our Rock – Jehovah Tsuri to guide us – gently pushing us along to solid ground.  My prayer for each of us is to take hold of His hand always – even on the straight, flat trails.  Maybe then the steep paths won’t appear so steep.

I enjoyed ten minutes of freedom from laundry this week.  The ten minutes where everything is clean, put away, and all baskets are empty.  Then someone takes a shower or finishes their sweaty activity, and the process starts all over again.  And I find myself once again sorting through a sea of stinky, sweaty laundry my blessings created.  Are there any of you that just finally throw your hands up and say forget it!  I’m not washing another piece of clothing – then proceed to just put the dirty clothes away with the clean clothes?  If you’re like me, this sounds ridiculous.  Yet this is exactly how we treat our souls.  Just as we set apart our dirty laundry, our lives need setting apart from the world.  God clearly tells us in His Word – we are not of the world (John 7:16).  These words are spoken by Jesus Himself.  And Romans 12:2 says, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” Once we have accepted the beautiful gift of Christ, the process of being set apart begins in our lives.

Have you ever had someone in your life, that no matter what you did or said, you simply weren’t ever good enough for them?  You worked hard to gain their acceptance, but it never happened?  Are you still working to gain approval?  Stop it!  There is good news for us who desire acceptance and approval- we already possess it in Jesus Christ if we have accepted Him as our savior! Ephesians 1: 3-6 says, “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ. For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us for adoption to sonship through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will – to the praise of his glorious grace, which he has freely given us in the One he loves.”

Not only are we accepted by Him – we are chosen.  Other than accepting the gift of Jesus on the cross, there is nothing we can do to earn or work toward acceptance with God.  How freeing is that fact?!  Because God loves us so much, He did the work and made a way for us to come to Him, fully acknowledged as one of His own.  So the next time we are tempted to seek approval from a person that will never give us what we desire –remember there is One who is always waiting for you with outstretched arms.

Jehovah Shalom {Names of God: Week 6}

As Christians, Satan is our biggest enemy. His interruptions in our life are not unexpected, yet where he strikes often catches us off guard. Satan creates doubts and fears, he stirs up feelings of discontent, he turns our relationships messy and our hearts and minds feel troubled. Suddenly, we find ourselves grasping for peace. We seem to have misplaced it somewhere as we’ve let the enemy wreak his havoc.

But Jesus is very clear when He tells us, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.” John 14:27 If we have accepted Jesus Christ as our Savior – we have HIS peace! It is our responsibility to claim this peace and then live in it. Our peace remains in the midst of chaos, not in the absence of it. Peace is a Fruit of the Spirit. When we are not at peace, it is time to seek God’s guidance in what we are withholding from Him and attempting to do in our human strength.

So this is a battle-cry! It is time to lock our shields together and raise them against Satan’s attacks.* When we stand firm together, we can stand firm in peace knowing our God is fighting the battle before us.

El Elyon {Names of God: Week 5}

0

What comes to our mind when we think about God is the most important thing about us.”  A W Tozer

This quote has plagued my thoughts lately.  What DOES come to my mind when I think of God?  How often does He come to mind?  And just when I start experiencing emotions making me feel inadequate in my thoughts of Him, I encounter someone like Lot- a beautiful example of God’s complete grace and guidance.  A man going where he should not have gone (more than once) and still arriving at the spot God told him to go.  Reading Peter’s writing in 2 Peter 2: 4-10 describing Lot as a righteous man encourages those of us who have fallen short a time or two.  This is the comfort we have in El Elyon – God Most High.  When He has proper placement in our lives, our paths are straight.  But this is the tricky part – wrestling with all our worldly resources to allow the one and only Source to reside as Most High in the day to day moments.  Like Lot, we are often taken captive by pressing issues or people in our world.  And when God sends someone to rescue us, we return to what we know instead of breaking the cycle and placing El Elyon in the position belonging only to Him. And the question returns – what comes to mind when we think about God….

 RealLife INDEPTH

Tozer gives 7 questions to help us discern El Elyon’s priority in our lives.  Spend some time asking the Lord to reveal the true answers to these questions and how to make sure He is the highest priority in your life.

  1. What do I want most?
  2. What do I think about most?
  3. How do I use my money?
  4. How do I spend my leisure time?
  5. What company do I enjoy?
  6. Who and what do I admire?
  7. What do I laugh at?

Now, take these same seven questions and answer them for Abram (Abraham) and Lot.  Make sure to use scripture to support the answers.  Which one do you relate with more?

El Shaddai {Names of God: Week 4}

The embarrassment made my face burn.  Having just spent over an hour shopping with the help of a patient sales clerk, I was ready to pay for my purchases.  Imagine my surprise when the same sales clerk, in a very hushed whisper, informed me my debit card was denied.  Obviously there was some mistake.  Indignant, I called the bank to set things straight- only to hear “insufficient funds” come from the other side of the line. Humiliated – I left the store with the sales clerk smirking yet frustrated as she put away my selections.

Insufficient is a difficult word to digest.  And while there are times there are insufficiencies in areas of our lives (often times from our own doing), we have a God that is completely sufficient – El Shaddai.  This name tells us God is sufficient to meet all our needs and will sustain us through whatever we face.

There are two words used for sufficient in the Old Testament.  The first word day (dahee) is found in Exodus 36:7  and is translated to mean enough.  The second word for sufficient, rab is found in Deuteronomy 33:7  is used involving a blessing and means abundant in size, quantity, number…

What area in your life needs some day and rabEl Shaddai is both.  Tell Him what you need.  He is listening.  And He is more than enough.

Jehovah Rapha {Names of God: Week 3}

0

It seems everyone we encounter these days is in need of healing.  Whether it is physical, emotional, relational and/or spiritual- the need is real and necessary.  In Exodus 15:26, God reveals one of His names to us, Jehovah Rapha – The Lord Who Heals You.  This is the only time this name is used in scripture.  Go back and read the events leading to this revealing in Exodus 15: 22-27.  Keep in mind the Israelites had just witnessed an enormous miracle from God in the parting of the Red Sea, and now they arrive at Marah suddenly bitter.

Are you ever bitter?  Bitter in Exodus 15:3 is angry, discontented, or heavy.  The Israelites were thirsty.  They wanted water, but God reveals Himself as healer.  Why?  From the beginning of the journey, God wants His people to know they need Him first and foremost.  He will provide for their every need if they will only rely on Him completely.

O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you;  my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water. Psalm 63:1

El Olam {Names of God: Week 2}

1

I heard a song the other day an old boyfriend used to sing to me. Part of the lyrics went like this:

“Need you by my side, girl you’ll be my bride.
You’ll never be denied everlasting love.
From the very start, open up your heart,
Be a lasting part of everlasting love.
Real love will last forever.”

The song, “Everlasting Love,” by Carl Carlton would make me giddy when he sang them. The other day they just made me laugh remembering how much I believed those words at the time. Turns out our everlasting love lasted about a year.

Too often we throw words like everlasting, forever, and eternity around in everyday situations. The pick-up line at school is taking forever. We have to wait an eternity to get back to the doctor in the emergency room. We’ve placed negative connotations on these words as if forever is somehow a bad thing.

Everlasting, Eternal God- El Olam, provides a different perspective on forever. We are promised if we are in Christ, we will spend forever with our Lord.

“Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord.” 1 Thessalonians 4:17

Shouldn’t this give us a new perspective? Perhaps the large amounts of time we spend waiting in lines or sitting in waiting rooms are our opportunities to spend time with Him. We can choose to pray, read His Word, or share with someone else who feels like they’re waiting “forever” about the true, eternal love we have. You could even share those lyrics above with them, because how true they are in El Olam.

Elohim – God is creator. Elohim created everything from nothing. With a Word (John 1:1), the universe was called forth into existence. I’m Weary

3

I’m weary.

Not in the physically exhausted, overwhelmed sort of way; but the weary that sneaks in disguised as disappointment and doubt. The weary begins with a whisper that what I do doesn’t matter and what I say isn’t heard.

And then I just want to stop. Give up.
Become complacent.

Because all of the hours and efforts and prayers seem empty and pointless, and nothing ever seems to change.
