Legacy: A Combined Mother/Daughter Blog

IMG_7276

“The greatest legacy one can pass on to one’s children and grandchildren is not money or material things accumulated in one’s life, but rather a legacy of character and faith.” Billy Graham

Powerful words spoken by a powerful man of God. What a legacy he has left – not just for his children and grandchildren – but for millions of people on this earth.

I remember attending one of his crusades many years ago. My daddy took my uncle, grandma, and me to a local football stadium to hear the sermon and listen to special guest artist, B J Thomas. The message of Christ and His sacrifice on the cross for us was preached simply and beautifully. No slide shows, skits, or productions were necessary – Jesus was enough that evening.

A hush fell over the entire stadium as a prayer was said by Billy Graham encouraging anyone wanting to accept Christ to make their way to the stage. In that moment, my grandma passed gas so loudly; several rows could not help but hear (or honestly smell for that matter). Immediately, while the prayer was still going, my grandma raised her head, glared at my uncle, and called his name loudly. I’ll never forget the look on my uncle’s face.

Shock.

Embarrassment.

Yet, he didn’t say a word. He quietly accepted the blame for her poorly timed bodily function.

There are many poorly timed behaviors in our lives. Moments we wish were hidden from the ears and eyes around us. If we know and have accepted Jesus as our savior, we can call out His name LOUDLY, or softly, and He will lovingly remind us He has already accepted the blame.

Have you accepted Jesus as your personal savior? Can you call on His name in times of need and heartache?

Will your legacy be one of character and faith?

If you’re not sure what that looks like, e-mail me – I would love sharing with you!

In working on my own legacy, my sweet oldest daughter is trying her hand at a blog post. Thank you for allowing me to share her precious words below…

Barking Hearts
By Learsi

I have this dog that is SUPER lazy. All he does is sleep on the couch, or when my mama is gone, he sits by the door. Only when the doorbell rings does he start barking and get excited.

Think about your relationship with God.

Are you lazy, tired and just taking a break until God rings a bell calling you to action?

Are you consistently reading your Bible, praying, looking for small ways that God can use you and jumping on them?

Sadly, most of us are like my dog. We wait for the bell to ring and drag us back to action and God. We should be the ones bringing people to God.

Being lazy is not why we are on this Earth! God created us to do his work. We should take every second of our day praising the LORD our God in everything we do.

The Bible says, “In EVERYTHING you do, do it for God…” Colossians 3:17.

I still have a REALLY hard time with this. I want to be scripturally active and help out with ministry whenever I can, but I am human, so sometimes I would rather be on my phone. I’m sure this distraction makes satan happy.

Do you know how we can strengthen ourselves against Satan?

If you think that you are the odd one out, then you are actually not. cialis 40 mg They also include a myriad order cialis online of protocols for the treatment of various dyfunctions. viagra low price The sufferers of ED tend to conceal this issue with them. We keep praying and staying in God’s word. There is NO way we can resist Satan interrupting our lives without it. We all need time with God constantly.

“But whose delight is in the law of the LORD, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither whatever they do prospers,” Psalm 1:2-3.

The Great Commission tells us God wants us active. You can find that in Matthew 28:16-20.

So let’s stop being like my lazy dog and be a person who is so scripturally sound that satan doesn’t want any part of us.

We don’t need a big audience or a mic. We all start with the people in front of us.

Ding dong – the doorbell rang…..

Consider: A Study on James {Week 1}

Image result for walking feet

That moment.

The one where an unexpected sucker punch from life leaves you on your knees breathless.

Have you experienced that moment?

I’m not talking about stolen credit cards, four flat tires, late bills or air conditioners going out on the hottest summer day.

I’m talking about the knock you off your feet explosion that makes your insides liquefy.

I’ve experienced this more than I care to admit.  And every time I have tackled the situation with a series of well thought out strategies (insert sarcasm)!  After curling up into a ball and allowing the pain and grief to consume me, I proceeded to spend money like water on various completely worthwhile purchases (eye roll).  Oddly enough, the problem still existed and I didn’t feel any better.

Several weeks ago, that unwelcomed moment stormed in again.  However, this time, I tried a new approach.  Reminded of the words in James, to consider it all joy, a new strategy emerged.  Instead of succumbing to the pain, I put on my earphones, laced up my tennis shoes, and headed out the door to walk.

And I walked,

And walked,

And walked….

And while I walked I praised God.  I praised Him for the situation.  I praised Him for His faithfulness in the past.  I praised Him for the creation around me.  I praised Him for the music in my ears.

I sang to Him.  I cried to Him. I told Him I was ready for the battle.

And I felt good!

Yes, there was still pain.  Yes, I still had to face the situation. Yes, there was a lot of work to go through.

But I was entering  the battle ground with a different strategy this time.  I allowed Him in from the beginning – not when I had exhausted all my fixes.

That’s all He desires – to be in from the beginning.  He knows the way through the situation.  His path is straight.

I sit staring at my calendar wondering how the schedule seems busier now than during the school year. With camps, activities and trips, it is hard to pick and choose which events are calendar worthy and which ones to take a pass on this year.  So I consider each neatly printed entry (written in pencil) on the dated blocks. How will this particular event benefit my children? Me? Is there enough time for each activity? How does this impact our family time?

But I’m asking the wrong questions – considering the lesser things.  The only real question of value is whether or not the activities are something the Lord wants for our family.

Consider 2 Timothy 2:1-7:

You then, my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus, and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men,[a] who will be able to teach others also. Share in suffering as a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No soldier gets entangled in civilian pursuits, since his aim is to please the one who enlisted him. An athlete is not crowned unless he competes according to the rules. It is the hard-working farmer who ought to have the first share of the crops. Think over what I say, for the Lord will give you understanding in everything. Each one of these requires a single-minded, disciplined approach in order to prosper. The soldier is obedient to please the commanding officer. The disciplined athlete trains diligently to win the prize. The hard-working farmer toils to enjoy a bountiful harvest. Veering from their single-minded perspective produces less than the best they could achieve.

This summer I desire a bountiful harvest for my family. So I will approach our summer calendar with a single-minded focus.

I’m single-minded in pursuit of you; don’t let me miss the road signs you’ve posted. (Psalm 119:10; MSG)

What is your single-minded focus? Does your calendar reflect it?

That moment.

The one where you find yourself face to face with someone’s true character.  Not the pretty façade they’ve normally displayed; the one that is covered. The one hidden from judgmental eyes and catty tongues.

And all you know to do is walk away – for a time.

To process the hurt.

To pray for guidance.

To heal a little.

And when it’s time to return –

a little wary

a little wiser

you try again.

To love and disciple the way God leads.

There’s a song by Don Henley – “The Heart of the Matter” – where the chorus says:

“The more I know, the less I understand

All the things I thought I knew, I’m learning again

I’ve been trying to get down to the Heart of the Matter

But my will gets weak

And my thoughts seem to scatter

But I think it’s about forgiveness

Forgiveness”

Some random thoughts on these lyrics…

The more I study the Word, the less I understand my reluctance to share Christ with people I encounter.

I am in a daily process to relearn life His way instead of my way.

And the heart of the matter is this, “the heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick; who can understand it?” (Jeremiah 17:9)

But God understands it.  He knows the secrets of my heart (Psalm 44:21).

And when I am weak, then I can be strong in His strength and guidance (2 Co. 12: 8-10).

Scattered thoughts are made obedient to Christ (2 Co. 10:5).

And it is about forgiveness.  God’s forgiveness of me (and you) through His Son on the cross.  His sacrifice makes everything else possible.

Image result for swing

I took my girls to the park this week.  I am embarrassed to admit it had been a long time.  A really long time!

And as I was swinging with them, emotions overwhelmed me.  My girls are big now and don’t need me to put them on the swing or push them.  Somehow, over the course of time, I have waited myself right out of some precious memories with my babies.

I waited for the weather to get cooler.

I waited for the weather to get warmer.

I waited for my girls to accomplish their to do list.

I waited for my schedule to have an opening.

I waited until I felt like it.

I waited.

And in the waiting, I missed the giggles between cries of,  “Push me higher mama.”  And the constant pleading, “Watch this mama, watch this!”

I tell them I’m sorry we haven’t done this more.  I promise to get better creating these moments.  Because I don’t want to wait myself out of moments anymore.

Forsaken.

Such an ugly word.

Even uglier when experienced.

Many years ago I received a text from a friend of two decades.  It simply read, “I can no longer be your friend.”

Devastation flooded through me. What had I done wrong? How could I fix it? I replied through text. I sent letters and cards.

Silence.

Throughout the entire grieving period of the lost friendship, God made it clear that this was His will.  Though I was forsaken by this person, He assured me that I was never forsaken by Him (Deut. 31:6).  He is the constant companion who calls me friend (John 15:15).

On January 10, 2010, The Burj Khalifa in Dubai, United Arab Emirates was unveiled. It is the largest tower in the world reaching a staggering height of 2,716.5 feet. If you’ve travelled to the top of the Empire State Building or Eiffel Tower, you were approximately 1,000 feet short of the height of Burj Khalifa. With an elevator ascending at 40 miles an hour, visitors canreach the observation deck in two minutes. Designed by Adrian Smith, the structure was originally named Burj Dubai, but was renamed in honor of the President of the UAE, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al Nahyan. The building was created to make a name for the area and create international recognition.

Sound familiar?

Building with the intent to make a name…

Tower of Babel

And those overachieving innovators only accomplished a structure of 300 feet.

Man is a determined creature. Many of us spend our lives building something that has no purpose for the Kingdom of God.

And just when we think maybe – maybe, we have accomplished something, someone else comes along and does it bigger and better. So our cycle of building begins once more.

In April 2016, plans were announced to create a new tower in Dubai – just a “notch taller” than the Burj Khalifa. Having the tallest building in the world is not even enough. They still want more.

But what if today our ‘more’ became Jesus and not the things of this world?

If we chose to make our building about Christ…

Building our lives for Him.

Building our homes for Him.

Building our relationships for Him- that is the only building that matters.

  • Read Luke 14:28. Make a list of the cost – to your life specifically – to build your life around Christ.
